The highlights of our MME forecast for boreal winter (December 2007-February 2008) are maturing of the La Nina conditions in the tropical Pacific, and drought reduction conditions over Eastern Australian coast. The current warm conditions in the northern regions of North American continent, including the Canadian region, may return to normal or cool further. Cooling in Canadian region is likely to be relatively stronger during January-February. In contrast, the Southern portions of North America, covering the southern United States and Northern Mexico, may see some warming. Further south, the west coast of the equatorial South America may be slightly cooler than normal. Equatorial Americas are expected to receive slightly surplus rainfall. Parts of east coast of the central North America show hints of a weak drought. Slightly surplus rainfall is also expected for the Philippines and regions to its southeast, up to central-eastern Australian coast. On monthly scales, northeast China, southeast Australia and the region encompassing the Southern United states and Northern Mexico regions may experience slightly warm conditions in December. The northeast Russian region is likely to experience strong warming in January, while the South East coast of the North America may experience a moderately warm month.
