Current Climate Conditions

In May through early July, a developing El Niño persisted in the equatorial Pacific. Positive temperature anomalies prevailed over the globe, with the highest positive temperature anomalies spanning northern Siberia and north-western North America. Negative temperature anomalies were observed in the northern North Atlantic and south-eastern Greenland, southern North America, maritime continent and Australia, coasts of Antarctica. Precipitation anomalies over the Pacific match the El Niño pattern: positive precipitation anomalies over the central and eastern equatorial Pacific bordered by a horseshoe of the negative precipitation anomalies spanning the North Pacific, maritime continent, tropical South Pacific. Positive precipitation anomalies were also observed over southern North America and southern Amazonia, south west Asia and Africa. Negative precipitation anomalies spanned northern Eurasia and north-western North America.
