Current Climate Conditions

In June through early August, a developing El Niño persisted in the equatorial Pacific. Positive temperature anomalies prevailed over the globe, with the belt of positive seasonal mean temperature anomalies above 3oC extending from Mediterranean through Siberia and northern North America. Strong positive temperature anomalies persisted in the Arctic and over the eastern Pacific. Weak negative temperature anomalies persisted over the North Atlantic and western South Pacific, meanwhile strong negative temperature anomalies were confined to the Antarctic coastal regions. Positive precipitation anomalies spanned the central and eastern equatorial Pacific, Africa, south-western Asia and south-western North America. Negative precipitation anomalies were observed over the maritime continent and adjacent regions, subtropical North Pacific, and in the belt from southern Europe, through southern Siberia, Alaska and Canadian Archipelago.
